Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on, non-invasive and natural method of evaluating the function of the
bodies physiological rhythm known as the craniosacral system.  This system is comprised of the membrane and
cerebro-spinal fluids that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.  It extends from the bones of the skull, face
and mouth (cranium) down to the bottom of the spine (sacral and tail bone areas).  Since this vital system influences
the development and performance of the brain and spinal cord, an imbalance or restriction in this system could
potentially cause any number of sensory, motor or other neurological disabilities.  Craniosacral therapy encourages
your own natural healing mechanisms to dissipate these negative effects of stress on your brain and spinal cord.  You
also benefit from better overall health and resistance to disease.  CST began in the 1970's when Osteopathic
Physician John E. Upledger first witnessed the rhythmic movement of the craniosacral system during a spinal surgery.
He then applied this information to the Osteopathic cranial techniques developed by Dr. William Sutherland to develop
this system of CST.

Over the years of applying CST, researchers have discovered that there are other techniques which have a strong
relationship to the craniosacral system.  Two of them are regularly used in our office.  The first is the
Somato-Emotional Release (SER) which is a very powerful, non-invasive technique to release emotional issues that
are "stored" in the physical body.  SER can be used by itself or in conjunction with psychological counseling to address
a variety of emotional issues that are often times, a major part of a chronic illness.  The other technique commonly
used in our office is
Lymphatic drainage Therapy (LDT).  LDT is another non-force, very gently method of assisting
the lymphatic system.  Under normal circumstances, our lymphatic system is designed to pick up the waste from our
cells and carry it (via the lymph fluid) away from our tissues.  Once the waste is in the lymph, our immune system can
act on all of the foreign debris and keep our tissues healthy.  Unfortunately, when our bodies experience physical,
chemical, psychogenic or energetic stress, our lymphatic system becomes faulty, often times resulting in stagnation of
lymph in the lymphatic channels.  This ultimately results in cellular toxicity and immune dysfunction, two very important
components of chronic illness.  LDT is very effective in correcting stagnation in the lymphatic channels and
re-establishing proper drainage throughout the lymphatic system to ultimately result in proper disposal of cellular waste.

Commonly Asked Questions:

Q:  How is CST performed?
A:  Your session is performed reclining or in a seated position.  You will be fully clothed and the session takes place in
a quiet setting.  Since the pressure applied by your practitioner is the same pressure on the weight of a nickel on your
body, the session is quite relaxing for you.  The practitioner sits positioned at various times throughout the session
adjacent to your head, torso or feet.

Q:  What will I experience in a session?
A:  Since we are all unique in our physical, chemical and psychological make-up, each person has their own individual
experience during a CST session.  Likewise, each session you have will vary as your body works through its
reorganization of previously held patterns.  Results can be felt immediately or soon after treatment.  Since CST helps
your body resume its natural healing processes, it is common for improvement to continue weeks after a session.

Q:  What kind of conditions can be helped with CST?
A:  There are a variety of health conditions that can be helped with CST.  Some examples include but are not limited
to:  chronic headaches, stress and tension related problems, TMJ dysfunction as well as neck & back pain.  CST has
also proven to be very effective in treating pregnancy related problems and pediatric problems such as sciatica
(buttock and leg pain), intercostal neuralgia (pain along the ribs), infantile colic, torticollis (tightening of the neck
muscles), breastfeeding problems and ear infections.

Q:  Are there any dangers or negative side effects that result from CST?
A:  NO.  Craniosacral therapy is completely non-force and can be safely administered to people of all ages including
newborns.  There are no negative side effects.
